The Case for The Unspectacular Fundamentals

Everyone is running an experiment with a sample size of one, and almost nobody records the results. As modern lifestyles evolve, self-observation, conducted with a minimum of rigour, is therefore valuable. Not the continuous surveillance of a device, but the periodic noticing of pattern. Where habit meets circumstance, it also produces a certain independence from the flood of advice. Someone who knows what happens to them when they sleep six hours does not need to be told what the research says about the average. They have the local data, and the local data is what they must live inside.

Discipline is the usual proposed replacement, and it is better, but it is also frequently misunderstood. Discipline is not the capacity to force oneself through unlimited unpleasantness — Livpure.
